About the St. Bede Institute
Founded in 2023, the St. Bede Institute exists to engage the intellectual, spiritual, and moral life of Catholics.
The Institute explores the riches of the Catholic intellectual and cultural tradition through theology, philosophy, liturgy, art and literature, bringing these disciplines into conversation with one another and with the enduring questions of human life.
Our Patron
The St. Bede Institute takes its name from St. Bede the Venerable (c. 672/673–735), the English monk, priest, theologian, historian, teacher, and Doctor of the Church.
St. Bede devoted his life to learning, teaching, and writing within the life of prayer. Sacred Scripture stood at the center of his scholarship, but the breadth of his learning was remarkable: his works encompassed theology and biblical commentary, history, chronology, the study of nature, language, poetry, and the liturgical life of the Church.
In St. Bede we find a model of the intellectual life in which the disciplines are distinguished without being divided. Faith seeks understanding; the inheritance of the past is received and handed on; and learning is ordered not merely to the accumulation of knowledge, but to wisdom, which is the passing of knowledge into the affections.
It is in this spirit that St. Bede is a fitting patron for the Institute as it engages theology, philosophy, liturgy, history, art, and literature in the pursuit of truth and in service to the life of faith.
The Work of the Institute
The work of the St. Bede Institute encompasses theology, philosophy, liturgy, art and literature, together with lectures and other opportunities for study and conversation. As the Institute develops, its work will continue to draw upon the breadth of the Catholic intellectual and cultural tradition.
